INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE 332-105/B NEGATIVE GROUND 3
PHASE POWER CONTROL UNIT
The BCS 332-105/B Tympanium 3 phase Power Control
unit is designed to replace the rectifier and Zener diode or diodes on all 3
Phase alternator equipped British motorcycles, such as 1979-1987 Triumphs, as
well as any earlier models which have been upgraded to high output by the
fitting of a 3 Phase system.
The 3 Phase stators can easily be identified by Lucas number 47244 (which is 180
Watt) or Lucas number 47252 ( a slightly lower wattage high output stator used
on some kick start only models, and which can be upgraded by replacing with the
47244 version for maximum output.) These stator part numbers are stamped onto
the outer periphery of the laminations. All 3 Phase Lucas stators have 3 wires,
but not all 3 wire stators are 3 Phase, so it is important to verify stator
number.
On motorcycles originally equipped with 3 Phase charging system, the 332-105/B
will directly replace the original rectifier and diode(s) for the utmost in
simplicity and reliability.
All earlier Lucas alternator equipped motorcycles that will allow the stator to
physically fit can be easily updated to a full 180 Watt output by simply
replacing the stator with a Lucas 47244, and wiring the 3 stator leads to the 3
yellow wires (AC INPUT) on the 332-105/B, the black (POSITIVE) wire to the
ignition switch, and securely grounding the case (NEGATIVE) of the 332-105/B to
the frame of the bike.
BEAR IN MIND THAT WHILE ALL TRIUMPHS (1979-1987) THAT ORIGINALLY WERE EQUIPPED
WITH 3 PHASE CHARGING SYSTEM CAME FROM THE FACTORY WIRED FOR NEGATIVE GROUND,
EARLIER MACHINES WILL HAVE TO BE CONVERTED TO NEGATIVE GROUND BY ENSURING THE
BATTERY AND THE COIL NEGATIVE TERMINALS GO TO GROUND, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
IF THE BIKE IS EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC IGNITION, YOU MUST ENSURE IT IS WIRED
NEGATIVE GROUND.
EXPENSIVE DAMAGE WILL RESULT IF A BATTERY IS INSTALLED BACKWARDS - ALWAYS MAKE
SURE THE BATTERY IS EQUIPPED WITH THE CORRECT FUSE (20 AMPS US TYPE, OR BRITISH
17/35 AMP.)
Fuseholders, fuses, and bullet connectors as well as wire and other wiring
accessories to make installation easier are stocked by BCS and available through
your favourite British bike shop if required, and tech. help is available if
needed. Output of British motorcycles is dependent on the condition of your
rotor, so it is advantageous to remove it and check to ensure it is not loose on
its centre, and requires approximately a 16 Pound pulling effort on each of the
magnetic poles to pull it off a steel or iron surface. Rotors that fail either
of these tests should be replaced, and stator to rotor clearance should always
be carefully checked as per the factory manual during assembly to ensure there
is no possibility of ANY contact between rotor and stator under any
circumstances such as extreme heat or loose crankshaft bearings. Failure to be
careful with this will result in expensive damage. If in doubt, call our tech
line with details.
Tympanium products are guaranteed against factory defects in materials or
manufacturing for a full 2 years from date of manufacture, but units showing
damage due to abuse, overheating, incorrect polarity, or excessive vibration are
not considered defective. If installed and mounted properly, this product should
far exceed the original Lucas components for reliability and simplicity.
